Second Marriages Need Clear Planning

When David remarried later in life, he assumed his old will would protect everyone. He loved his wife Karen and wanted his children from the first marriage provided for. He never updated it.

When David remarried later in life, he assumed his existing will would still protect everyone he cared about. He adored his wife, Karen, and wanted to ensure his children from his first marriage were also provided for.

But David never updated his will.

When he passed away, the lack of clarity created confusion, tension and unnecessary emotional strain. What he intended and what the law decided were two very different things.

A properly written, up-to-date will would have set out his wishes clearly and avoided uncertainty at an already difficult time.

Why blended families need extra care

At Visit Wills, I'm seeing more and more blended families looking for guidance that feels personal, straightforward and reassuring. There are specific tools โ€” like life-interest trusts and clear substitute-gift clauses โ€” that let you look after a new partner and make sure children from a previous relationship aren't forgotten.

A marriage almost always revokes an earlier will. If you've remarried and haven't reviewed your will since, it's very likely out of date.
